Your first visit to BODYBACKUP and Onward

What to expect from your first visit
to Body Back-Up Osteopathy & Sports Injury Clinics

  • During your Initial Consultation, we’ll look at how your symptoms started and what makes them fluctuate - completing a Case History form.

  • We will then take your medical history and examine you to assess your posture, structure and function – At this stage you will be asked to remove some items of outer clothing so we are able to observe your Spinal Mobility – We may need to see your lower and upper body to assess your function more completely, so wearing underwear you are comfortable with is best – (shorts are an option).  We offer a blanket or towel on request too.

  • We conduct a ‘Standing’ examination to assess your spinal and muscular function and you will be asked to bend in different directions as far as you are ‘able’ to comfortably – or perform a Dynamic Squat test. - This will help inform us of off areas that we might treat.
                                           __________________________________

  • We'll also look at aspects of your lifestyle - especially if you have a long history of problems or an injury - to help us gauge the right treatment and advice.

  • We can then make a diagnosis and will explain your treatment plan so you'll know how many treatment sessions you will need and what to expect afterwards.

Our Treatment Management Plan

  • Treatment may be in the form of Joint
Manipulation, Deep Massage for muscles,
Stretching and Joint Mobilisation as well
as other techniques to suit your needs.

  • You can usually expect a Follow-Up session
within three to seven days after the initial
consultation –

  • A number of sessions in between depending
on your needs may be suggested.

  • A final appointment check-up two to four weeks later.

  • With Sports Injuries, we look at what treatment will help your injury to heal, explain what you can do to speed up recovery and let you know when you can safely return to your sport – we may provide some individualized remedial exercises.

‘Follow-Up’ Appointments

  • We will assess how you are improving at the start of each consultation - you should notice a progressive difference at each visit – symptoms should reduce and your mobility improve – we will ask you to ‘score’ the change to help gauge progress.

  • We aim to provide advice and individual exercises to reduce the chance of your problem recurring and these will be reviewed regularly to see if you are reaching your goals or need the exercises modified to make them more effective.

  • We will also ask you whether you have noticed improvement in your lifestyle, work comfort, or improved sports performance etc.  -  These are useful measures of your progress.

Once your set of appointments is completed, we'll also ask you to fill out an aftercare questionnaire on-line to help us improve what we do.

Body Back-Up checkup – Your Future Management

Once you're feeling good we want you to stay that way, so, with your agreement, we'll send you a check-up invitation from time to time by post or email or text message to your mobile phone.

Possible After Effects of Treatment

Any side effects of treatment will be explained – you may feel soreness, - or tender, normally develops a superficial bruise (if you bruise easily).  This will all clear in 24 hours or so, and is quite normal.  Some patients also feel tired after treatment. If you have any concerns – please contact us.

A few words from Osteopathic undergraduate Students who have worked with Robin Lansman

'We've been in Sports Clinic for the past 4 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it! We found it very beneficial as all the skills are also transferable to general clinic practise. We thought you'd like to hear about some of the things we've learned during our time with Robin- hopefully this will be useful for other students coming into sports clinic in the future. Robin has challenged the student group in a supportive manner to help re-think and re-contextualise the view taken towards different patients'.

Here's some of our discoveries during the last four weeks!-
>
-Functional bio-mechanics- Robin Lansman,s different approach to patients, particularly regarding positive and negative motivators for exercise has been useful
-Deeper palpation- palpate dysfunction in muscles and 'track-it' during active movements, different planes of tension and different parts of the muscle.
Instead of treating a muscle as a whole he's taught us to differentiate areas of dysfunction and challenge our knowledge of the benefits of false insertions.

-Treatment- false origin with active inhibition, introduction to functional active release
-Stretches- isolating and making more focal/specific i.e deep gemelli hip-stretch
-Distinction between types of Orthotics- impression molded/neutrally cast
-Assessment of appropriate/inappropriate footwear including sports shoes with/without Orthotics.
-Revisiting muscle physiology concepts: 'Contracted muscle is shorter, shortened muscles is weaker'
-Case history- more direct approach- 'where's it affecting you today/now?'
-Follow-up questions for returning patients: pt demonstrate exercises. If stretching exercises are making it worse- maybe pt doing it too hard/too much. If exercises are making it worse- question your diagnosis

'Please pass on our appreciation to Robin.'

Orthotics and treatment from BodyBack-Up Osteopaths - testimonial

Testimonial – Orthotic Insoles

  • I visited your clinic in 2001 and had some very successful treatment on a back problem caused mostly by fallen arches.  You sold me some insoles (skiing) for £30 ish which I thought were expensive at the time but you said they would outlast my shoes.  Yeah, right I thought.

  • 11 years later they have just about worn through!  That’s with daily use!  Outlasting several pairs of shoes and trainers.

  • So, I am back for more!  Just about to buy a pair for myself and for my 11 year old son (who wasn't even born when I bought my first insoles!)

  • Hows that?

  • Seriously - many thanks for what you did at the time.  I have not had many re-occurrences of the problem since and those that I do have are caused by me not following your stretching exercises properly.

My very best regards

Testimonial – Orthotic Insoles

  • I have been coming to see Robin for a year now, having been in absolute agony, and not being able to run for about 3 months.
  • Within 3 months I was running again and he recommended some insoles to put in my trainers and I have always got through a pair of trainers every 6 months at £120 for a pair of trainers is rather expensive and since I have had these insoles – which I put them in January in a new pair of trainers and I haven’t had to replace them thus far and I don’t think I will be for at least a few months.
  • The insoles have been absolutely amazing – I have gone 9 months without any back pain whatsoever, so I would recommend them highly.

Sports injuries past and present

"I came to Body Back-Up many years ago as a result of sporting injuries and also injuries suffered in a road traffic accident.
At the time I was seeing Robin Lansman who I found to be absolutely superb, very quick, very friendly, very helpful.
His diagnosis was instant and spot-on and the treatment he administered at that time way, way, surpassed three months of Physiotherapy that I had previously for the same ailment , with no positive effect.
Robin has treated me many times since for a variety of sports injuries and other ailments and each and every time the results have been the same.  Very quick results and amazingly helpful, not only that, but he has also helped me with the preventative side in so much as each time I am treated, he doesn’t just treat the problem, he looks at the cause and advises me on how to prevent a recurrence.
I have also been treated by other people at Body Back-Up with the same results, so I had no qualms in recommending the practice, specifically Robin, to many people, all of whom speak most highly of him."

Osteopathy at BodyBackUp ideal for YOUR mum too?

" Any time at home I say my neck is stiff, my leg hurts - any number
of things the immediate response is "It is time you went to see Robin.

I have been doing that regularly for well over ten years and have
always been pleased with the results of the treatment.  Robin is very
efficient, pleasant and extremely helpful and seems to find the answer to my
problems.
I am now quite ancient but will continue to visit Robin as long as I
can and with his help it will be for many 'comfortable' years. "

Grateful words from Film and Stage Actor Freddie Fox!

" Body Backup, and specifically Robin Lansman, has proven completely
invaluable to me over the last year.

As a performer my job dictates that I must have complete control of
my body and totally freedom of movement and my regular sessions with Robin
have been able to ensure that.
For everything from immobilising neck pain to general maintenance of
my spine, Robin has managed to get me back on track immediately and ready
for work. "

Managing the Sponsored run without the need for the Anti-inflammatories thanks to Sports Osteopath advice and treatment at BodybackUP

"The day after Easter - my back collapsed..... literally. I went out to get a
pint of milk, returned home, closed the car door and that was it.......I
couldn't move.

A 20 second walk to the house took 20 minutes whereupon I had to immediately
lie down and at best I was able to move my upper body to reach over for some
anti-inflammatories. Totally bed ridden - all very disappointing and
upsetting as I was in training for the Moonwalk Breast Cancer fund raising
walk in London which was due to be early May.
After some heavy inflammatories and some initial physio, I returned to see
Robin - the last time was in 2007 when he had put me back into shape.
Needless to say this time my back was in a much worse state but after the
first session, I was able to move more freely.  After the second and third I
was able to walk much better.  The fourth session was the day before the 13
mile walk through London.
Thankfully, I was mobile enough to do the walk and although I had heat packs
on my back and carried some anti-inflammatories with me as precautionary - I
am certain I would not have been able to complete it had it not been for the
osteo sessions that I had had with Robin prior to the walk.
I now know that I have to 'maintain' the back and plan to visit Robin more
than once in 5 years!  I would thoroughly recommend Robin as an osteopath -
not only the treatment but the advice has proved beneficial and importantly
allowed me to raise close to £700 sponsorship money for breast cancer.

A few sessions of expert Osteopathy to make a big difference to YOUR life

"I had suffered from a painful hip for many years after a motor
accident. My GP referred me to a physiotherapist and although I dutifully
followed the prescribed exercise routine, the pain just intensified to the
point where standing still  for more than a minute or so was unbearable.

I had little or no hope that an osteopath could help me, but thought
anything would be worth a try, I even considered going to a faith healer!
My prejudices were totally unfounded.

Robin Lansman quickly put me at my ease and told me that he didn't operate on a local level like physiotherapy typically does, but rather took a holistic view of pain and injury.
This would certainly explain why instead of looking at my hip, he
looked at my range of movement then set about treating an entirely different
area.
I was sceptical that it would make any difference, but when I tried
moving again, instead of awkwardness and pain, I felt like my body was
actually working with me for the first time in years.

After only a few sessions with Robin, I can move around much more
easily and am finally optimistic about the future. I won't be making that
trip to Lourdes for a good few years yet, and would encourage anyone who
feels like they have tried everything to give Body Back-Up a go.

BodyBackUp Osteopathy for Badminton players

"Had a really good experience with Robin.  He has managed to on a
number of occasions, to find the "real source" of the problem instead of
just the effect like many others have before.
At least on two occasions when other practitioners have failed, he
has really managed to sort out the problem and really quickly!  Really
positive experience! "

BodyBack Up Osteopathy Check-UP with good feedback

"My first visit to Body Back-up must be some 10-12 years ago, I had
been experiencing, for some time, pain and stiffness in my lower back when
my doctor referred me to Robin Lansman. After an examination and my first
treatment I was informed that my problem was mainly due to stiff joints,
also my pelvis was out of alignment.  I had a few more treatments and
subsequently my problem had been resolved.
I see Robin every six months for a general check up/maintenance which helps to keep me flexible.
Occasionally I need a treatment in between when I feel my back is
ceasing up or my muscles have gone into spasm and usually just one treatment
proves beneficial. I feel very confident and secure in knowing that whenever
I have a back problem I know Robin can sort it out for me.
I have recommended several of my friends and the feedback I get is
always positive.

Runner & Retired Nurse Practitioner helped with Osteopathy at BodyBackUp

"This year I determined to run a half-marathon.  I trained conscientiously,
but as my distances increased so did a pain, which started out as a niggle
in my ankle, until it affected my whole leg.  A week before the Big Day I
had to stop running altogether and so I missed my target and was bitterly
disappointed.
After an enforced rest period of a few weeks I started anew with my sights
on another local half-marathon, but this time, fearing a repeat of what
happened before.  I went to see Robin.
He soon found the cause of my problem.  It wasn't my leg, it was my back!
In that first session he treated my back and taught me exercises to do at
home.  I even found I could touch my toes - the first time for many months.
I left my appointment feeling optimistic and very pleased.  The next day I
started my training regime, and to my delight found that not only could I
run without a twinge in my leg, but that I could go faster and further!
One more session with Robin consolidated my previous treatment and not long
after that the half-marathon day arrived.  I'm pleased to report that not
only did I get round with no pain, but I finished having done a personal
best.  Thank you Robin!

Osteopathy after Disc Surgery....read more on improving posture

"I'm so pleased to have found Robin Lansman, Osteopath. Having had a disc removed from my neck 10 years ago, I've certainly made the rounds of health care professionals on two continents! I also considered myself reasonably 'on top of' the idea of good ergonomics with regard to sitting properly at a desk working on a computer. Well, over the years my set-up has changed due to moving house, changing jobs, etc and I was back to making some basic mistakes with regard to my typing posture. From a photo of me sitting at my home office, Robin Lansman made a couple of suggestions, inexpensive to implement, that addressed a nagging problem in my upper back. I'd recommend Robin Lansman and "Check my posture".

Clear Action points given with hands on Osteopathy from BodyBackUp

"I had big back and neck problems, and I came home very shattered after every day working in front of my computer. I thought I just had to cope with that, because of the nature of getting older and office work!
Then I learned about "Check my posture", so I asked Robin Lansman - my Osteopath, to make my posture assessment. I realised there are so many things I do wrong so "I ended up with six clear action points and all of them were quite straight forward to fix", once pointed out ............. "Nothing which would need a big investment or a big change in my office!"
It has been 3 weeks since the assessment was done. I really can see the improvement. I have much less back pain, much less neck pain and I still sometimes have the tendency to go back to the bad habits! It's now different and I am trying to exactly what the Osteopath said.
I would say there is an 80% improvement so far!"

Get your "life back".....Osteopath Robin Lansman on GP recommendation!

"I was recommended to come to Body Back-Up by my GP. The difference it has made in my life has been tremendous! I have had about six treatments now and whereas I could barely get in or out of the car or stand for any great length of time I now find that my life has changed and I have my fitness back. I have got my life back and my mobility is just so much better now that it was when I first came here to see Robin Lansman. I have got my "life back" and am able to do all the things I couldn't do before and in fact have probably never been able to. Thank you!"

Wait until it gets better of take steps to help your tennis elbow?

"I've had a final treatment with a Physiotherapist about three weeks ago,
when she told me she could no longer do anything for me.
 She also told me to
wait for the shoulder to heal or I should consider having a Cortisone
injection, which I do not like the idea of.

Eighteen months ago, I had a similar problem with my elbow (same kind of
symptoms). My GP told me to wait 6 months and if it did not get better to
consider a Cortisone injection.

I felt I could not wait as I need to be able to use my arms in order to do
my job without feeling constant pain and "heavy" arm, and did not want to
take an injection without trying something a bit more natural. I therefore
went to see Robin Lansman, Osteopath who fixed my problem, in 4 or 5
sessions, if I remember well."

Ski better with help from BODYBACKUP Sports Osteopathy

"Robin Lansman was recommended to me by a skiing friend of mine who was
watching me struggling with a "Locked Back" in Klosters.

I had been to a sports doctor who, fancy on paper, prodded me, but didn't actually tell me what to do.

Anyway, I pitched up at Maida Vale and 6 sessions later I am a lot better and my next skiing session was in a different league. Highly recommended!

I emailed Robin Lansman digital photographs of my desk at work and he has
tweaked how I sit. Also my bike, which was rejected out of hand as being
totally unsuitable - such a good idea.

As a result my back is miles better.

Body Backup really are very helpful and are highly recommended - they will
sort you out."

Osteopathy for long standing problems back pain and for the family

"I have visited Robin Lansman and his team for several years after suffering
since my late teens with lower back problems.

Robin quickly pointed out other areas that could bring on the problems and in actual fact, all the other treatments I had gone through in the past were treating the symptoms
rather than the root cause.

With a bit of work, and following the exercises, I have reduced my pain to minimal levels, know when things are getting out of balance again and, importantly, know how I can help myself to stop the pain from spiraling out of control.

I cannot recommend Body Back-Up highly enough and have sent several members
of my family to Robin so that they can also benefit from his expertise and
knowledge."

Osteopathy during pregnancy with BodyBackUp

"Robin Lansman's treatments helped me survive a very uncomfortable triplet
pregnancy, during which I became so large that I could barely walk.

Yet Robin kept me on my feet and his weekly sessions eased out many of the aches
and pains associated with carrying three babies.

I saw Robin right up to the birth, with my last treatment only four days before my babies were born.

Each time I saw him I walked out of his surgery feeling much lighter, more
comfortable and more able to cope.

Robin was a massive help and it was a great relief that I had his treatments to support me through the most physically challenging time of my life.
I would definitely recommend Robin Lansman to anyone having a baby."
