Your first visit to BODYBACKUP and Onward

What to expect from your first visit
to Body Back-Up Osteopathy & Sports Injury Clinics

  • During your Initial Consultation, we’ll look at how your symptoms started and what makes them fluctuate - completing a Case History form.

  • We will then take your medical history and examine you to assess your posture, structure and function – At this stage you will be asked to remove some items of outer clothing so we are able to observe your Spinal Mobility – We may need to see your lower and upper body to assess your function more completely, so wearing underwear you are comfortable with is best – (shorts are an option).  We offer a blanket or towel on request too.

  • We conduct a ‘Standing’ examination to assess your spinal and muscular function and you will be asked to bend in different directions as far as you are ‘able’ to comfortably – or perform a Dynamic Squat test. - This will help inform us of off areas that we might treat.
                                           __________________________________

  • We'll also look at aspects of your lifestyle - especially if you have a long history of problems or an injury - to help us gauge the right treatment and advice.

  • We can then make a diagnosis and will explain your treatment plan so you'll know how many treatment sessions you will need and what to expect afterwards.

Our Treatment Management Plan

  • Treatment may be in the form of Joint
Manipulation, Deep Massage for muscles,
Stretching and Joint Mobilisation as well
as other techniques to suit your needs.

  • You can usually expect a Follow-Up session
within three to seven days after the initial
consultation –

  • A number of sessions in between depending
on your needs may be suggested.

  • A final appointment check-up two to four weeks later.

  • With Sports Injuries, we look at what treatment will help your injury to heal, explain what you can do to speed up recovery and let you know when you can safely return to your sport – we may provide some individualized remedial exercises.

‘Follow-Up’ Appointments

  • We will assess how you are improving at the start of each consultation - you should notice a progressive difference at each visit – symptoms should reduce and your mobility improve – we will ask you to ‘score’ the change to help gauge progress.

  • We aim to provide advice and individual exercises to reduce the chance of your problem recurring and these will be reviewed regularly to see if you are reaching your goals or need the exercises modified to make them more effective.

  • We will also ask you whether you have noticed improvement in your lifestyle, work comfort, or improved sports performance etc.  -  These are useful measures of your progress.

Once your set of appointments is completed, we'll also ask you to fill out an aftercare questionnaire on-line to help us improve what we do.

A few words from Osteopathic undergraduate Students who have worked with Robin Lansman

'We've been in Sports Clinic for the past 4 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it! We found it very beneficial as all the skills are also transferable to general clinic practise. We thought you'd like to hear about some of the things we've learned during our time with Robin- hopefully this will be useful for other students coming into sports clinic in the future. Robin has challenged the student group in a supportive manner to help re-think and re-contextualise the view taken towards different patients'.

Here's some of our discoveries during the last four weeks!-
>
-Functional bio-mechanics- Robin Lansman,s different approach to patients, particularly regarding positive and negative motivators for exercise has been useful
-Deeper palpation- palpate dysfunction in muscles and 'track-it' during active movements, different planes of tension and different parts of the muscle.
Instead of treating a muscle as a whole he's taught us to differentiate areas of dysfunction and challenge our knowledge of the benefits of false insertions.

-Treatment- false origin with active inhibition, introduction to functional active release
-Stretches- isolating and making more focal/specific i.e deep gemelli hip-stretch
-Distinction between types of Orthotics- impression molded/neutrally cast
-Assessment of appropriate/inappropriate footwear including sports shoes with/without Orthotics.
-Revisiting muscle physiology concepts: 'Contracted muscle is shorter, shortened muscles is weaker'
-Case history- more direct approach- 'where's it affecting you today/now?'
-Follow-up questions for returning patients: pt demonstrate exercises. If stretching exercises are making it worse- maybe pt doing it too hard/too much. If exercises are making it worse- question your diagnosis

'Please pass on our appreciation to Robin.'

Orthotics and treatment from BodyBack-Up Osteopaths - testimonial

Testimonial – Orthotic Insoles

  • I visited your clinic in 2001 and had some very successful treatment on a back problem caused mostly by fallen arches.  You sold me some insoles (skiing) for £30 ish which I thought were expensive at the time but you said they would outlast my shoes.  Yeah, right I thought.

  • 11 years later they have just about worn through!  That’s with daily use!  Outlasting several pairs of shoes and trainers.

  • So, I am back for more!  Just about to buy a pair for myself and for my 11 year old son (who wasn't even born when I bought my first insoles!)

  • Hows that?

  • Seriously - many thanks for what you did at the time.  I have not had many re-occurrences of the problem since and those that I do have are caused by me not following your stretching exercises properly.

My very best regards

Testimonial – Orthotic Insoles

  • I have been coming to see Robin for a year now, having been in absolute agony, and not being able to run for about 3 months.
  • Within 3 months I was running again and he recommended some insoles to put in my trainers and I have always got through a pair of trainers every 6 months at £120 for a pair of trainers is rather expensive and since I have had these insoles – which I put them in January in a new pair of trainers and I haven’t had to replace them thus far and I don’t think I will be for at least a few months.
  • The insoles have been absolutely amazing – I have gone 9 months without any back pain whatsoever, so I would recommend them highly.
